Traditional Architecture – Black Sea Houses
Houses in the Black Sea region bear the characteristics of the geography and culture they belong to. They are generally located on slopes and hills, integrated with forests and greenery.
As a characteristic reflection of the geographical features, the use of wood is a prominent building material in the Black Sea Houses. In addition to wood, it is also possible to see mixed structures using stone and wood together.
We can see various construction systems that vary according to settlement characteristics in different areas of the region. Every detail is shaped according to needs and the cultural and historical background. Wood stacked system, timber framing system, and mixed structures stand out among them.
In the region where agriculture and animal husbandry are common, buildings such as barns and covered terraces are located underneath or in very close proximity to the houses. The colors of the buildings also vary depending on the type of wood used in the region. Commonly used wood materials include spruce, pine, walnut, oak, chestnut, and black locust.
